Professor Crenshaw in Germany to Celebrate 20 Years of the Inception of Intersectionality
To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of “Intersectionality ,” a concept coined by Professor Crenshaw to address the unique struggles faced by women of color in society , Professor Crenshaw will be attending a conference held on January 7 , 2009 in Berlin , Germany to discuss feminism in light of the 2008 presidential election in the United States. The conference is hosted by the Gender Competence Center , a research institution at the Humbolt-University of Berlin.
In addition to the previously mentioned conference , Professor Crenshaw will also participate in another conference in Frankfurt , Germany entitled “Celebrating Intersectionality? Debates on a multi-faceted Concept in Gender Studies.” The concept was coined in 1989 and since its conception; it has attracted attention on a global scale. The conference aims at to bring together scholars and leading experts with differing views on Intersectionality in order to create an atmosphere that would allow for an in-depth exploration of a concept that has significantly influenced a large amount of research pertaining to race and gender. The two day conference will convene on January 22 , 2009 at the Goethe-University of Frankfurt.
During the conference , Professor Crenshaw will address various aspects of Intersectionality , including the social and historical conditions that has lead to its development , its deep ties with the black American Women’s movement , and how it can be deployed in conjunction with other theories and concepts to achieve a deeper understanding of the hardships endured by those simultaneously affected with both racial and gender discrimination. Most importantly , she will be addressing the need to employ the rhetoric of Intersectionality , especially within the discipline of Gender Studies.
