
Jean-Philippe Mathy is Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Illinois. His research interests include French and European intellectual history, French-American cultural relations, and contemporary France. He is the author of "Extrême-Occident: French Intellectuals and America" (1993) and "French Resistance: the French-American Cultural Wars" (2000). He is completing a book on the rhetoric of loss and mourning in contemporary France, and has written extensively on French civic republicanism and issues of national identity.
