SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR
Full Time | New York, NY.

AAPF is enthusiastically seeking an experienced Social Media Director to join our team! This position is a full-time role located in New York.

About AAPF

Founded in 1996, The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) is an innovative think tank that connects academics, activists, and policy-makers to promote efforts to dismantle structural inequality. We utilize new ideas and innovative perspectives to transform public discourse and policy. We promote frameworks and strategies that address a vision of racial justice that embraces the intersections of race, gender, class, and the array of barriers that disempower those who are marginalized in society. AAPF is dedicated to advancing and expanding racial justice, gender equality, and the indivisibility of all human rights, both in the U.S. and internationally.

Social Media Director

Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, the Social Media Director will serve as the lead for the newly created social meeting team — developing and executing AAPF social media strategy and elevating AAPF’s brand presence across various platforms and verticals. The Director of Social Media is responsible for proactively shaping the public’s understanding of AAPF, racial and gender justice, critical race theory, intersectionality, and other core concepts on our social media platforms.

 

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

Social Media Strategy & Engagement (50%)

  • Lead and create short and long-term social media strategies for AAPF programmatic initiatives, events, and speaking engagements for the Executive Director.

  • Manage the production of social content including videos and graphics

  • Utilize a creative approach to develop strategy and tactics that increase engagement, build the AAPF brand, and drive followers to take action.

  • Create a social media calendar that is in alignment with the editorial calendar.

  • Develop a process for drafting, editing and sharing social media posts (internally and externally).

  • Balance promoting programmatic events and creating “movement moments” across social media platforms.

  • Work closely with the VP of Communications to ensure messaging is aligned in press and on social media to create a cohesive narrative.

  • Regularly stay abreast of changes in the social media ecosystem and offer new ideas for how we can leverage social media better to achieve the organization’s mission.

  • Shape t5he evolving vision for AAPF’s social media strategies. 

  • Establish KPI’s and utilize analytics to drive a social media strategy that translates AAPF’s campaign work to targeted audiences online.

Team Management (30%)

  • Manage and hire the social media team to efficiently function.

  • Review, edit, and evaluate all social media posts before they are published for brand consistency.

  • Hire, manage and regularly evaluate staff and contractors’ work.

  • Manage and instill collaboration between writing and research, arts & media and program departments.

  • Collaborate with other communication leadership to develop high-level processes and systems. 

 

Brand Strategy (20%)

  • Collaborate with the VP of Communications to ensure brand consistency between AAPF social media platforms and the Executive Director of AAPF social media platforms.

  • Create a social media policy to ensure best practices and brand consistency online. 

  • Support development of content to support the Executive Director’s office to amplify AAPF thought leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and interest in advocacy for racial & gender justice;

  • 5-7 years working in a non-profit, public relations, or similar setting;

  • Familiarity with writing social media copy, compiling analytics and monitoring social media trends as it relates to relevant news.

  • Experience managing a team with an emphasis on professional development.

  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills;

  • The ability to translate talking points into social media copy that is creative, concise and consistent across all platforms.

  • Experience implementing social media strategies and a knowledge of the social media landscape;

  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Monday.com, Hootsuite, and Canva. 

  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to efficiently prioritize work and timelines for multiple projects;

  • Thrives in an environment that is collaborative;

  • Able to be flexible in order to navigate evolving landscape

 

Salary range is $95,000- $105,000  a year, commensurate with experience, education, and expertise
